Frozen in time, an abandoned cottage in Leek, Staffordshire, offers a rare glimpse into a life that has remained untouched for over a decade.

The home, nicknamed ‘the potter’s cottage’, was once occupied by a family of four, with the father working for a local pottery company. Urban explorer Kyle from Leeds discovered the cottage in its sorrowful state, with its furniture and belongings still intact.

As soon as Kyle entered the cottage, he was amazed by how much had been left behind. Plates were left on the kitchen counter, overalls were hanging from the ceiling beams, and a clothesline still had washing hanging, as if the owners got up and left one day without coming back. Personal memories were scattered around the desks and walls, such as family photos and days gone by, making the exploration even more unique.

“It was alleged that the man of the house worked for a local pottery company. Later in life, he served as a handyman carrying out any repairs to the household and garden and even the family car,” said Kyle. “He was a collector of vintage antiques, judging from the Coca Cola bucket pictured and little keepsakes scattered across the kitchen counters. It looks as though they left one day and never returned home.”

Pictures revealing the inside of the cottage show a child’s picture left on a chair, with newspapers and wall calendars dating back to 2010 providing a clue as to when the home was last occupied. The small cottage, which is situated in a remote area, consists of a kitchen area, living room, and two bedrooms, with the toilet situated outside, indicating just how far back the property dates.

The isolation of the potter’s cottage makes its discovery all the more intriguing. Though not much is known about the family that once lived there, the home has managed to remain a time capsule, with the washing left hanging to dry as if they will return any minute. The preservation of the cottage provides a rare insight into a life once lived, and the artifacts left behind tell a story of a family and their memories.

Kyle was glad to have discovered the cottage and ticked it off his list of explorations. However, as the cottage remains abandoned and untouched, it raises the question of what happened to its former inhabitants, and why they never returned home.
