This is the recommended eating plan.
As guidance, participants were given specific instructions on the amount of certain foods they are supposed to eat in a day.
These included eating 5 vegetables, 3 fruits and 3 portions of whole cereal per day. Plus three unsweetened dairy products and low-fat protein. Participants were also recommended to eat fish three times a week and to reduce their consumption of unhealthy foods such as processed carbohydrates, fatty meats, and sugar.
A few cautions
It is important to note, that these positive results are accompanied by some qualifications. Dr. Marc Molendijk, professor and member of the editorial board of PLoS ONE, where the study was published, warns that giving too much importance to the results can give the wrong message to people with depression. He warns that people with this mental disorder may end up feeling that it is their fault if they are depressed.
Dr. Joseph Firth, says he has a more optimistic view of the subject. The University of Manchester researcher said that “‘a healthy body, healthy mind’ is a very good saying indeed in this case.
