I love experimenting in the kitchen, trying out new cuisines, ingredients, and flavors to create unique and exciting recipes like Instant Pot Honey Garlic Chicken or Easy Fiesta Taco Pizza. It’s a fun way to flex my creativity and explore new tastes.

However, there are also times when I crave nothing but pure comfort food – something warm, hearty, and satisfying. A meal that fills me up and makes me feel cozy inside. That’s where this Crockpot Cube Steak recipe comes in.

Starting with cubed steak, I lightly season and bread it before searing it in oil until it’s crispy and golden. Then, I toss those delicious crispy bits into the slow cooker with beef broth, French onion soup, diced tomatoes, au jus sauce mix, and Worcestershire sauce, and let it all simmer together for the rest of the day.

By the time dinner rolls around, the steak is incredibly tender and infused with all those amazing flavors. I love to serve it up on a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes, with a simple vegetable on the side. It’s not fancy or complicated, but it hits the spot every time. It’s the perfect meal for when you just want to cozy up and indulge in some delicious comfort food.

Recipe tips:

  • Searing the steak can be skipped in a pinch, but it REALLY helps seal in the flavors and helps the steak maintain a bit of texture.
  • If you want to thicken the sauce, mix together 2 tablespoons of cold water and 2 tablespoons of flour and add to the pot about 30 minutes before serving.
  • This sauce uses a can of tomatoes, but it does NOT taste like tomatoes. It just helps add depth to the sauce.

What is cubed steak?

  • Cube steak is beef, usually round top or top sirloin, that has been pounded with a meat tenderizer or put through an electric tenderizer. It’s called that because it comes out with these little cube-shaped indentations on the surface. Just ask at the meat counter, and they’ll know what to give you.

Can I cook this dish in less time on the high setting?

  • Not in this case. It really needs long slow cooking to get the meat nice and tender. But it’s worth the wait!

Besides mashed potatoes, what else is good with this dish?

  • It would also be great served over noodles. And any simple vegetable, like peas or beans, works well as a side.
