It is undeniable that dogs have shorter lifespans compared to humans. However, there are remarkable exceptions where dogs enjoy extraordinarily long lives, defying all expectations and odds.

One such exceptional case is that of Bobi, a dog who narrowly escaped death as a puppy and went on to become not only the oldest living dog in the world but also the oldest dog in recorded history.

Tragically, the world recently received the news of Bobi’s passing at the remarkable age of 31.

Dr. Karen Becker, a respected veterinarian, shared this heart-wrenching update on Bobi’s demise via a Facebook post, stating that he reached the age of 31 years and 163 days before crossing the rainbow bridge.

“Is there ever enough time? I think not,” she wrote. “Despite outliving every dog in history, his 11,478 days on this planet would never be enough for those who cherished him.”

Bobi’s extraordinary longevity was officially recognized by Guinness World Records in February, securing his status as both the oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever, breaking a record that had stood since 1939 when Bluey, a 29-year-old dog, held the title.

Bobi belonged to the Rafeiro do Alentejo breed, known as a livestock guardian dog. He resided with his owner, Leonel Costa, and Leonel’s family in Leiria, Portugal.

Bobi’s survival into adulthood is a remarkable tale in itself. Leonel’s father was a hunter, and their household was filled with dogs. However, when one of the dogs, Gira, gave birth to four puppies, the decision was made to put them down due to an already surplus number of dogs in the household.

It was a common practice among older people to bury unwanted animals in a hole, and this appeared to be the fate of most of the newborn pups. Except, Bobi, who managed to escape being caught and was still being cared for by his mother.

Eight-year-old Leonel and his siblings chose to keep the puppy a secret for several weeks, aware that their parents would spare the dog if he grew older. Leonel recounted, “We knew that when the dog opened its eyes, my parents would no longer bury it.”

Little did he know that this decision would lead to a lifelong bond with Bobi that would span over three decades.

Earlier this year, Leonel reported that Bobi was still in relatively good health, despite his unprecedented age. Bobi’s eyesight had deteriorated, and he rested more, but he remained otherwise healthy.

While the exact secret behind Bobi’s remarkable longevity remains unknown, Leonel attributed it to the love and care he received. Bobi had the privilege of enjoying “human food” and had the freedom to roam his house, which was set in a “calm, peaceful” environment, far from the bustling city.

Dr. Becker noted that Leonel believed the “recipe” for Bobi’s long life included “good nutrition, constant contact with nature, freedom to explore his surroundings, consistent veterinary care, and, most importantly, love.”

Leonel shared, “Bobi knows he’s deeply loved.”

As we bid farewell to the extraordinary Bobi, who defied all odds to become the oldest dog in recorded history, our hearts go out to his loved ones during this time of grief. 💔❤️
