The new trailer for “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” was previewed at CinemaCon 2023 in Las Vegas, and Amber Heard made a brief appearance as Mera. Warner Bros. confirmed that she is in the trailer, which has not been released to the public yet. The sequel will see Jason Momoa and Heard reprise their roles as Arthur and Mera, respectively.

This news of Heard’s cameo comes after a virtual petition to remove her from the sequel gained over 4.6 million signatures. Supporters of Johnny Depp launched the campaign, labeling Heard a “domestic abuser” after allegations of domestic violence and abuse surfaced during their high-profile defamation trial in Virginia. Last spring, a jury awarded Depp more than $10 million, while Heard received $2 million.

Heard testified during the trial that she almost lost her role in “Aquaman” due to the media attention surrounding her legal battles with Depp. However, the former president of Warner Bros. Pictures, Walter Hamada, claimed in a video deposition that she was almost recast due to a lack of onscreen “chemistry” between her and Momoa, not because of the Depp controversy. Hamada also disagreed with Heard’s claim that her part in the sequel had been “pared down” because of the Depp situation, saying that Mera was never intended to be central to the sequel.

The trial created a mixed reaction towards both Heard and Depp on social media, with more animosity towards Heard. Despite the controversy, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is still set to be released on December 20, directed by James Wan. Fans of the first movie are eagerly awaiting its release and are curious to see how the chemistry between Momoa and Heard will be in the sequel.
